Overview of the current circus situation in Croatia and Serbia, and opportunities for cooperation via the regional Teatroskop program
Wednesday 23 January from 10:00 am to 11:30 am, Archives et Bibliothèque Départementales des Bouches-du-Rhône, 13003 Marseille
What’s new in south-eastern Europe? Cirkorama, Cirkusfera, and ROOM 100, all members of the European networks, have been pioneers of contemporary circus in the region for 15 years and have organised festivals, workshops, creative laboratories, and much more. There have been vibrant human and artistic exchanges, but the contemporary circus scene is still relatively unknown to the French network. Yet there’s a strong desire to discuss what could be imagined together, possible avenues for cooperation, and opportunities for artists, via the Teatroskop program run by the Institut Français inSerbia, and through the example of the partnership with the Plus Petit Cirque du Monde. And why not envisage a major event dedicated to this region that will be held in France in 2026?
Caroline Sotta has held a number of positions in France and abroad (Maison des Jonglages, Institut Français in Tokyo, Usine), then with circus companies (Collectif Protocole, Muchmuche Company). She is currently a cultural attaché at the Institut Français in Serbia, where she oversees the regional Teatroskop program.
Director of the Plus Petit Cirque du Monde (PPCM) circus school in Bagneux. The PPCM has been awarded the Centre Culturel de Rencontre label for its cultural activities. It is dedicated to the heritage of the periphery, and is a hybrid place for experimentation and the transfer of knowledge. It is at once an artistic and urban factory, a laboratory for social cohesion, a platform for international exchange, and a school for the arts of risk.
A circusnext prizewinner in 2010, Antonia Kuzmanić is now co-director of the ROOM 100 collective in Split, and director and producer of the Peculiar Families festival. A member of the Circostrada steering committee since 2018, she participates in projects funded by the Europe Creative program as well as regional collaborations.
Milan Manić is a circus artist, founder of Cirkusfera, and one of the artistic directors of the Cirkobalkana festival. A member of the Circostrada network and the regional jury of the CircusNext platform, he is actively involved in the development of cultural policies in Serbia, particularly concerning the recognition of contemporary circus as an artistic discipline.
Jadranka Žinić Mijatović is a circus artist, and producer. She founded the Cirkorama and the Cirkobalkana festival in Zagreb and is a member of circusnext and Circostrada. Since 2000, she has been active on the independent cultural scene as a coordinator, author, and teacher, and she actively participates in lobbying actions to improve working conditions for artists in the region.
