After the triumphant success of their show Yé !, vwhich sounded an alarm about the urgency of climate change, the virtuosos of Circus Baobab are back with an equally socially aware creation. Yongoyély (“the excisor” in the Susu language) pays tribute to African women, their independence, and their resilience.
Amid dust and cinderblocks and a mix of music and song, six women and three men plunge the audience into the chaos of Conakry’s streets.
Relying on rudimentary apparatus, they perform a series of acrobatic feats. Aerial acrobatics, lifts, hand-to-hand balancing, Russian bar… They combine traditional dances with krumping. And express their ardent belief in a better life. A life where women are freed from the customs and mutilations of bygone eras.
